The basics

What Is an Aluminium Profile Shutter?

An aluminium profile shutter is a cabinet or wardrobe door made by fitting a glass or mirror panel into an extruded aluminium frame. The profile gives the panel its edge, its rigidity and, in the with-handle versions, its grip. The result is a slim, modern door that is lighter-looking than a solid board and shows what is behind it, or reflects the room.

Mirano by Varun Impex supplies a range of aluminium shutter frames. The core range has six profiles in three sizes: the ultra-slim 20-20, the standard 45 mm and the wider 50 mm. Each comes as a handleless profile and a profile with an integrated handle, and each is available in all ten Mirano finishes. The range also includes the 20-20 Paste-On, AIR 30kg, Filo 50, Filo 20, Allinea and V Rail Door frames, listed from 07 below. For edge handles that fix to board shutters rather than frame glass, see the G profile handle range; for recessed finger channels, see gola profiles. The overview of the whole family is on the aluminium profiles page, and the aluminium profile shutter guide covers glass and mirror choices in more depth.

Lighter look

A glass or mirror panel in a slim frame reads as lighter than a solid front, which helps in compact kitchens and bedrooms.

Show or hide

Clear, frosted, reeded or tinted glass lets you decide how much of the contents shows.

Built-in grip option

The with-handle profiles remove the need for a separate handle, so there is nothing to align on the glass.

One finish language

All ten finishes run across profiles and handles, so frames, edge handles and gola can match.

01Ultra-slim

20-20 Insert Profile: Ultra-Slim Frame for Glass Shutters

The 20-20 is Mirano’s slimmest glass-shutter frame. A 20 × 20 mm section holds the glass with only a thin line of metal around it, which is why it is chosen for kitchen wall units, lift-up shutters and display units where the glass should do the talking.

Key features

  • 20 × 20 mm section keeps the visible frame to a minimum
  • Takes 4 mm glass with gasket or 5 mm glass without gasket
  • Made for openable kitchen shutters and lift-up shutters
  • Works with a slim hinge; handleless, so no projecting grip on the face
  • Available in all ten Mirano finishes
Section 20 × 20 mm. Recommended maximum shutter size 600 × 1200 mm.

20-20 Insert Profile with Handle: Slim Frame, Built-In Grip

The same slim-frame idea with a rounded handle lip along the edge. The shutter opens by the profile itself, so there is no separate handle to buy, fit or align, and the glass front stays clean.

Key features

  • Slim aluminium frame with an integrated rounded handle lip
  • No separate handle to fit or align
  • Takes 4 mm glass with gasket or 5 mm without, per the 20-20 range

45 mm Aluminium Profile for Wardrobe and Cabinet Shutters

The 45 mm profile is the all-round frame for larger glass and mirror shutters. A 22 mm deep, 45 mm wide section gives the frame enough rigidity to carry tall shutters up to 3 metres, which is why it is the usual choice for wardrobe fronts.

Key features

  • 45 mm wide × 22 mm thick multi-chamber extrusion
  • Takes 4 mm glass with gasket or 5 mm glass without gasket
  • Recommended up to 600 × 3000 mm per shutter

How to Choose an Aluminium Shutter Profile

Six decisions settle most specifications. Make them against the elevation drawing, before the glass is ordered.

1. Frame width: how much metal do you want to see?

The 20-20 is the slimmest line and puts the glass first. The 45 mm and 50 mm give a more defined frame and suit larger shutters. Look at the elevation from the room, not the drawing board.

2. Handleless or with handle?

Handleless profiles pair with push-open, touch latches or a gola channel below. With-handle profiles let the frame be the grip, which is simpler to fit and cleaner for the user.

3. Glass: clear, frosted, reeded, tinted or mirror

Clear glass shows contents, so it needs lighting and tidy shelves. Frosted or reeded glass softens what is behind. Tinted or smoked glass suits darker, moody kitchens. A mirror suits wardrobes.

4. Finish: match the room, not the sample board

Hold the finish against the cabinet colour, the worktop and the tap or sink finish. Use the Finish Studio above, then confirm with a physical sample under the room’s own lighting.

5. Size, weight and hinges

Check the shutter against the recommended maximum, then the glass weight table above, then the hinge datasheet. See our kitchen fittings and wardrobe fittings for hinges and accessories.

6. Plan the lighting early

Glass-front units look best lit. Our LED profiles can be planned into the same cabinet so the light and the frame are designed together.

How Much Glass Can the Frame Carry?

Mirano’s catalogue gives recommended maximum shutter sizes rather than a weight rating: 600 × 3000 mm for the 45 mm profile and 600 × 1200 mm for the 20-20. The load a door puts on its hinges is mostly the glass, so here is the weight of the glass alone at each size.

Shutter sizeArea4 mm glass5 mm glassWithin 45 mm limitWithin 20-20 limit
450 × 900 mm0.41 m²4.1 kg5.1 kgYesYes
600 × 1200 mm0.72 m²7.2 kg9.0 kgYesYes
600 × 2100 mm1.26 m²12.6 kg15.8 kgYesNo
600 × 3000 mm1.80 m²18.0 kg22.5 kgYesNo

Approximate glass weight only, from standard float-glass density (about 2.5 kg per m² for every mm of thickness). The frame, gasket and any mirror backing add weight. These figures are our calculation, not a Mirano load rating.

Count the hinges, not just the frame

A 3-metre glass shutter can carry around 18 kg of glass before the frame. Hinge count and rating decide whether the door hangs true over years, so confirm both with the hinge datasheet.

Choose 4 mm or 5 mm on purpose

4 mm glass is used with a gasket and 5 mm without, per the catalogue. Thicker glass feels more solid and weighs 25 percent more, which matters on tall doors.

Size to the profile

Stay inside the recommended size for the profile. Taller or wider than the limit is a conversation to have with our team before the glass is cut.

Design guidance

Which Finish Goes With Which Kitchen?

A starting point from an interior-design point of view. The frame is a thin line, so its colour works like a pencil outline: match it for calm, contrast it for graphic definition.

Cabinet colourFinishes that pair wellWhy it works
White or ivory kitchenSilverChampagneBlackBlack for crisp contrast; champagne to warm it; silver for a clean, cool line.
Grey or greige kitchenPietra GreyChampagneBlackPietra Grey stays tone-on-tone; champagne adds warmth to cool greys.
Light wood or oakBlackLight BronzeChampagneBlack gives a graphic frame; bronze and champagne keep it soft and natural.
Dark walnut or charcoalChampagneBrass GoldDark BronzeLighter metals lift dark cabinetry; dark bronze goes quietly tone-on-tone.
Navy, teal or emeraldBrass GoldArmani GoldCopperWarm golds and copper are the classic partners for deep colours.
Matt black kitchenBlackCopperPietra GreyBlack disappears into the run; gold or copper turns the frame into an accent.
Terracotta or earth tonesCopperLight BronzeArmani GoldStay in the warm family so the metal reads as part of the palette.

Match the metal around the room

If the taps, sink and cabinet handles are brushed or black, repeat that finish in the frame so the metals feel intentional.

Keep to one warm or one cool family

Mixing a cool silver frame with warm gold hardware nearby can look accidental. Pick a family and use a second finish only as an accent.

Test under the real light

Warm LED, daylight and showroom spots each shift metallic finishes. Judge a physical sample in the actual space before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

An aluminium profile shutter is a cabinet or wardrobe door in which a glass or mirror panel sits inside an extruded aluminium frame. The profile holds the glass, gives the door its rigidity and, in the with-handle versions, provides the grip.

A handleless profile has a clean face and relies on a push-open mechanism, a touch latch or a gola channel to open. A with-handle profile has a lip built into the frame, so the shutter opens by the profile itself and needs no separate handle.

The 45 mm and 20-20 profiles take 4 mm glass with a gasket or 5 mm glass without a gasket, per Mirano’s catalogue. Glass data for the 50 mm profile is not published yet, so ask for the datasheet.

The catalogue recommends up to 600 × 3000 mm for the 45 mm profile and up to 600 × 1200 mm for the 20-20. The 50 mm profile limit is not published; confirm it with our team.

Mirano publishes recommended sizes rather than a weight rating. For planning, 4 mm glass weighs about 10 kg per square metre and 5 mm about 12.5 kg, so a 600 × 3000 mm 4 mm shutter carries about 18 kg of glass before the frame. Hinge count and hinge rating decide the practical limit, so confirm them with the hinge datasheet.

Silver gives a clean, cool line, black gives crisp contrast, and champagne warms the look. If the taps and sink are black, black frames repeat that metal and look deliberate.

On dark walnut or charcoal, lighter metals such as champagne and brass gold lift the cabinetry. Dark bronze stays tone-on-tone for a quieter look. On light oak, black or light bronze keeps it natural.

Brass gold and armani gold read as warm and rich, especially with navy, emerald, black or cream cabinetry. Copper adds a warmer, redder accent. Use one gold-family finish and repeat it on handles and gola.

Yes, on the 20-20, 45 mm and 50 mm profiles and on Mirano’s handles. Mirano supplies all ten finishes across these: Silver, Champagne, Light Bronze, Dark Bronze, Black, Pietra Grey, Brass Gold, Armani Gold, Copper and Rose Gold Gloss. Confirm stock and lead time when quoting. For the 20-20 Paste-On, AIR 30kg, Filo, Allinea and V Rail Door frames, confirm the available finishes when you enquire.

No. The finish previews are digital renders for guidance, and screens vary. Ask for physical finish samples and judge them under the actual lighting before specifying.

Aluminium frame shutters are used with both glass and mirror, especially in wardrobes. Mirror adds weight and has its own backing, so confirm the thickness and the size against the profile limit with our team.

Clear glass shows what is inside, so it suits lit display units. Frosted and reeded glass soften and hide contents, which suits everyday kitchen storage. Tinted or smoked glass suits darker interiors, and mirror suits wardrobes.

Glass fronts directly above a hob collect grease and heat, so choose frosted, easy-to-clean glass there and plan the extractor properly. Glass suits wall units, crockery units, bars and display units best.

Choose 20-20 for slim frames on kitchen wall units and lift-up shutters, 45 mm for wardrobe and tall shutters, and 50 mm for larger shutters where you want a wider frame. Handleless or with handle depends on how the door will open.

Yes. Glass-front units look best lit, and lighting is normally planned into the cabinet separately from the frame. See Mirano’s LED profiles and plan the lighting with the frame.

Yes. Request a quote through the contact page or the dealers page, and our team will confirm products, finishes, sizes and supply for your project.

In a paste-on profile the glass is fixed on the surface of the frame. In an insert profile it sits recessed inside the frame channel. Mirano lists both 20-20 versions, and the AIR 30kg frame in insert and paste-on forms. In the catalogue the 20-20 Paste-on has a recommended maximum of 600 × 2400 mm, against 600 × 1200 mm for the 20-20 Insert.

AIR 30kg is Mirano’s aluminium frame for glass wardrobe shutters, used with the Air Hinge 30kg, which is rated for 30 kg per door. The catalogue lists the frame at 28 mm thick and 25 mm wide, for 4 mm or 5 mm glass up to 600 × 2400 mm. The four-sided Air Glass Structure 30kg built on it opens to 105° and is specified for 4 mm glass and doors up to 600 × 2950 mm.

Filo is Mirano’s aluminium frame system for openable wardrobes. Filo 50 and Filo 20 are two of its profiles, alongside Filo Wood and Filo Slide. The frame takes glass, bronzed glass or mirror fronts as standard and can be made to measure beyond the standard sizes. Ask for the datasheet to confirm section sizes and limits.

Allinea is a 35 × 40 mm aluminium frame for openable wardrobe shutters. The catalogue lists a glass version (4 mm with gasket, 5 mm without) and a wooden version for 18 mm panels, both up to 600 × 2700 mm, used with the Allinea hinge that opens to 270° with soft close.
